A STORE MANAGER’S TREK UNIVERSITY GUIDEBOOK
This guidebook will present resources and best practices for store managers to get the most from Trek University — creating a store with consistently high-performing staff.
Trek believes that people best sell the products they ride and the products they know. If you want your staff to be successful in selling Trek bikes and gear, they need to ride Trek products themselves and know them inside and out. Trek University was developed to meet those needs.
SELL WHAT THEY KNOW: TRAINING
Trek University contains comprehensive training courses designed for retailers to quickly gain knowledge on products, services, sales, and customer service techniques.
SELL WHAT THEY RIDE: REWARDS
Trek University rewards individuals’ training efforts with awesome Employee Purchase (EP) discount privileges, contest eligibility, and access to special promotional deals.
This enables store employees to ride products and gain first-hand experience, which they can share with customers.
STORE MANAGER FORMULA FOR TREK U SUCCESS
1. GUIDE MANDATE: Set a high standard and hold your team accountable.
a. ALL employees are required to complete the “Explorer Curriculum” AND the “Sales Basics,” or “Assembly School” within the first 30 days of being hired.
b. ALL employees complete the “Guide Curriculum” within the first 60 days.
c. ALL employees in at least one additional Trek U Pro curriculum within the first 90 days. (“Advanced Sales,” “Inventory,” “Service Technician,” “Service Advising,” or “Manager Basics”)
d. Manager uses admin to monitor all employees’ training progress and communicate with store owners and employees.
2. SCHEDULE TRAINING TIME: Because you expect your employees to be Guides and stay up to date on new products, you must provide them with the time to train.
PRO TIP: Every employee has 30 minutes per week of scheduled training time to stay up to date on new products and practices. New employees are scheduled for 60 minutes each day for their first month or until they reach Guide status and complete their first curriculum.
3. USE YOUR TREK U ADMIN: Use your Trek U admin dashboard on a weekly basis to:
a. Track overall employee progress toward completing curriculum.
b. Download training reports on employee progress.
c. Message employees directly to encourage or reward training.
d. Manage employee enrollment in courses and curriculum.
PRO TIP: Don’t focus on Guide-Status only. Track employee’s progress toward completing job-role related curricula like Sales Basics or Assembly School and communicate that progress publicly to all employees at least monthly. Give kudos to rock-star individuals, call out new and important training courses to pass, and remind everyone of your store’s training expectations.
4. REWARDS & CONSEQUENCES: - Your store’s training culture starts with you. Great managers utilize both rewards and consequences.
1. Make sure everyone on your team understands your expectations for training and reward those who meet or exceed those expectations.
2. Discuss employee purchase privilege with all employees and communicate consequences for violating Trek’s Employee Purchase Policy.
TREK UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEE PURCHASE REQUIREMENTS
There are two Employee Purchase discount levels earned through Trek University training. Completing 100% of the courses in each curriculum will unlock an EP course that serves as your employee’s path to discounted product.
Explorer Curriculum– Learn about the most popular Trek and Electra bikes and gear. Ignite your appetite for more product knowledge and unlock a baseline Employee Purchase discount on trekbikes.com B2B.
Guide Curriculum– Level-up your product knowledge with an extensive understanding of the Trek and Electra product line and earn an even steeper Employee Purchase discount on trekbikes.com B2B. The Guide EP discount is as good as it gets and is required for purchasing Project One!
As we launch new products and add to our training catalog, the “Explorer” and “Guide” curricula will inevitably change. You won’t lose credit for the work you’ve already done, but you will need to complete the new courses to re-up your Guide or Explorer status and corresponding discount on a regular basis.
When this happens the (24.1) version of the EP course will be replaced with a new version. This course will need to be completed for your EP discount to appear on B2B.
When your discount is unlocked, you will see an “Explorer” or “Guide” icon next to your price on B2B.
TREK UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEE PURCHASE PRIVILEGE
Trek believes that YOU are the single most influential person in a potential customer’s purchasing decision. Trek wants you to know more about our products than anyone else and believes that the best way for you to learn is by using them yourself. You can do this by taking advantage of your Employee Purchase discount through Trek University. This is why Trek University rewards your training with awesome employee purchase discounts on Trek and Bontrager.
THE INTENT OF THIS PROGRAM IS TWO-FOLD:
20% reward your hard work
80% Give you personal experience with Trek and Bontrager products
Because the goal is for you to ride and learn about the products yourself, you may only take advantage of the EP discount privilege to purchase products that you will ride. If you’d like to purchase Trek or Bontrager products for your family, friends, or loved ones, this must be done through your shop discount with the permission of a store manager.
You are not allowed to resell anything you purchase through the employee purchase program for at least 365 days. Violating this devalues what you have in your store and negates your employee purchase access for at least one year.
If you purchase a product with an employee purchase discount and it just doesn’t work out the way you’d hoped – bring it up with your manager, and we’ll work together to find the best solution.
